
Getting Your Textile Curing Right with Custom Gallium Iodide Lamps
If you’re running an industrial UV curing line for fabrics, you’ve probably run into that frustrating problem where the ink looks dry on top, but it’s still gooey underneath. We see it all the time. That’s why we build custom gallium iodide (GaI) lamps. Most people start with standard mercury lamps, but those often just “skin over” the surface. GaI is different. It pushes the light into that 350nm to 450nm range, which is exactly what you need when you’re dealing with thick inks and porous fabrics. It actually gets deep into the fibers, making sure the ink is cured all the way through, not just on the surface. The nitty-gritty on the build We don’t do one-size-fits-all here. We tweak the tube length and the wattage to match how fast your conveyor is moving. If you need to crank up the speed to hit a deadline, we can bump up the wattage to keep the cure quality sharp. But a heads-up: these things gethot. Really hot. You’ve got to make sure your cooling fans or water-jackets are up to the task. If the quartz envelope gets too toasted, the lamp starts to struggle and you’ll lose your output. Keep an eye on those housing temperatures—it’ll save you from a premature burnout and a midnight repair. Fitting them into your line The good news is that these are basically drop-in replacements. We’ll handle the custom end-caps and wiring so they play nice with the ballasts you already have. Now, let’s be honest about the trade-offs. GaI lamps cost more than mercury ones. They’re also a bit pickier about power. If your voltage jumps around, you’re going to see streaks in your prints. It’s a pain. To avoid that, we usually suggest a stabilized transformer. It keeps the power steady across the whole width of the fabric, so every inch of your print looks exactly how it should.
